Biosis was proud to recently host the Sydney Historical Archaeology Practitioner’s (SHAP) workshop, an important annual event for heritage professionals, students and academics. SHAP brings together voices from across the heritage and archaeological sectors, to share ideas, spark conversations, and build connections within the industry.
This year’s event, SHAP25 was hosted at the National Centre of Indigenous Excellence in Redfern, with catering provided by Aunty Beryl and Yaama Barrgay Catering. Across the day, ten speakers presented a rich cross-section of perspectives, showcasing the diversity and depth of experience that characterise the heritage industry. From emerging professionals to established leaders, the speaker line-up captured a wide range of experience. Biosis team members Megan Porter and Maggie Butcher were proud to contribute as part of this year’s program.
A highlight of the day was a group discussion activity that had everyone on their feet, quite literally. Designed to spark conversation and fresh thinking, the session proved to be an energising and inclusive way to break down barriers and encourage collaboration across different areas of the heritage industry. It also served as a fantastic icebreaker, supporting one of SHAP’s core goals: helping young and early-career professionals find their voice and place within the broader Australian heritage community.
As always, SHAP included a touch of fun, with the return of the legendary SHAP bake-off. This year’s entries were as creative as ever, featuring everything from edible dig sites to cleverly crafted artefacts.
We’re incredibly proud of the Biosis team who worked behind the scenes to make this year’s event a success. Special thanks to our Business and Technical Development team—Emma Murray, Crystal Garabedian, and Makala Poole—for their hard work and dedication in helping to deliver a memorable SHAP25. The feedback we’ve received has been overwhelmingly positive:
"As the founder of the SHAP workshops, I just want to let you both know that I was extremely impressed and proud of the effort that Biosis put into this year’s event." - Denis Gojak
On behalf of the team at Biosis, a heartfelt thank you to everyone who attended, presented, participated—and baked. SHAP continues to be a space for important conversations, meaningful connections, and a platform for where new voices are heard. We’re honoured to have played a part in continuing this valuable tradition.
We look forward to SHAP26!
