Consultant Spotlight: Claire Nunez

Get to know the people of Biosis through our ‘Consultant Spotlight’ profiles. This week we sat down with our Technical Director — Heritage NSW, Claire Nunez, to find out more about her career.

Tell us about your expertise and experience in heritage?

I started out my career in materials conservation (objects). After enduring working outdoors in Canberra in winter (limewashing buildings and painting merry go rounds), I decided that maybe I would try some other things.

After completing my Cultural Heritage Studies Degree I ended up working in the Heritage Division at the Commonwealth Department of Environment and Heritage (which has had more than a dozen different names since then). I was lucky enough to try many different roles in the changing department and worked on National and Commonwealth heritage listings, World Heritage listing of the Australian Convict Sites, the Australia Heritage Strategy, Defence heritage, Australian Heritage Council support, International Heritage projects, Kokoda Track Initiative, and even had a go at Renewable Energy programs for a while.

Prior to Biosis I was in consulting, managing a team of heritage specialists who worked on projects across Australia.

Why did you want to work at Biosis?

I was interested in working in a company that offered a diverse range of services, and to learn from specialists in technical fields that I hadn’t worked in before. I think we can often get stuck in thinking about our work in the same way all the time, and I wanted to challenge myself to work on more diverse projects and to help build the services of the NSW Heritage Team.

I’m still getting my head around ecology, zoology, botany and the acronyms that go along with the work, but it’s fascinating and I’m learning a lot.

What do you like about working at Biosis?

It’s a great team of passionate people who are committed to the work they do, and they are a great bunch of people. I’m excited about the future for Biosis and the NSW Heritage team, and the pipeline of projects that we have coming through. It’s so wonderful to see the team growing and taking on new challenges and creating quality outcome for our clients.
