What is a Heritage Interpretation Plan, and what is included in the report?
The significance of some heritage items is not always evident: a Heritage Interpretation Plan (HIP) provides policies, strategies and detailed advice on how to understand and communicate the importance of a heritage item.
A Heritage Interpretation Plan (HIP) is based on research and analysis, and plans. It includes:
- An explanation of the significance of the item, both during a conservation project and in the ongoing life of the item.
- The key themes, storylines and audience for the site.
- Recommendations about interpretation media.
- Practical and specific advice about how to implement the plan.
Why/when do I need to get a Heritage Interpretation Plan (HIP)?
You will probably need a Heritage Interpretation Plan (HIP) if you undertake works on a heritage listed site and this could be local, state, national or world heritage listed places.
For many heritage items, interpretation is an opportunity to engage with a wide audience and to communicate effectively about the significance of a place. Importantly:
- For items that attract visitors, interpretation is an integral component of management.
- For many places, interpretation supports both educational and recreational purposes.
- For some heritage places, the opportunity for interpretation is required by a consent authority when there are proposed changes or when works are undertaken.
