Research Assistant – Heritage, Melbourne.

Biosis is looking to appoint an energetic Research Assistant to join our team in Port Melbourne on a full-time 12-month contract with the opportunity to extend for the right candidate. This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading consultancy that provides ecological, heritage and environmental approval services throughout south-eastern Australia.

Biosis employs a highly experienced multi-disciplinary team of aquatic ecologists, archaeologists, botanists, zoologists, environmental planners and GIS analysts.  We have offices in Albury, Ballarat, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, Wangaratta, Western Sydney and Wollongong.

Our Melbourne office is located in Port Melbourne, close to the CBD and easily accessible by public transport.  We are a very short walk from the North Port tram stop. This central location provides access to all the services of Melbourne without the hassle of traffic and parking.

About the role

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who will be working with our Victorian Heritage consulting team to provide essential research, fieldwork, logistical, and administrative support. This opportunity will develop your knowledge within the archaeological consulting industry whilst supporting our heritage team. You will have the opportunity to work on a variety of projects throughout the state with a diverse range of clients.

As a Research Assistant with Biosis, you will be provided with ample opportunity to participate and gain practical experience in archaeological field methods, technical reporting, Aboriginal community consultation, and project management. Our Consultant Development Program will ensure you receive formal coaching and support from senior members of staff, as well as ongoing informal mentoring from leading experts in the field.

Working closely with our multi-disciplinary team of professionals, you will become an integral member of the heritage team in Victoria, a crucial contributor to existing and future archaeology projects, and key support for the development of our heritage capabilities in the region

Selection criteria

To be considered for this role, please demonstrate these required skills and attributes within your cover letter:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in Archaeology (or completing in 2021),
  • Ability to meet the Qualification Guidelines for a Heritage Advisor, or will meet upon completion of an in-progress qualification https://www.firstpeoplesrelations.vic.gov.auchoose-heritage-advisor
  • Basic understanding of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006, Heritage Act 2017, and Planning and Environment Act 1987.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Demonstrated ability in problem-solving and completing tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Strong written communication skills, such as formal report writing.
  • Strong organisational skills including being able to prioritise tasks and meet deadlines.
  • High attention to detail and competence with database management and administrative processes.
  • Competency with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, or similar software packages.
  • A current driver’s licence (manual preferred).
  • Australian citizenship, or a current work permit (required).

Desirable selection criteria

  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities
  • Willingness to work in remote locations.
