Research Assistant – Heritage – 12 month contract position (Newcastle).

Biosis Pty Ltd, a leader in ecology and heritage consulting, is seeking to appoint a full-time Research Assistant (Archaeology/Heritage, Graduate level) for 12 months ideally in our Newcastle, New South Wales offices. This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading consultancy which provides ecological, heritage and environmental approval services throughout south-eastern Australia.  

Biosis employs a highly experienced multi-disciplinary team that includes archaeologists, aquatic ecologists, botanists, GIS Operators and zoologists. We have offices in Albury, Ballarat, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, Wangaratta and Wollongong.

Working closely with our multi-disciplinary team of professionals, you will become an integral member of the heritage team in NSW, a key contributor to existing and future projects throughout NSW, and a driver for the development of our heritage capabilities in the region.

We are seeking a highly motivated individual who will be working with our consulting team to provide essential logistical, research and administrative support. This opportunity will develop your knowledge within the archaeological consulting industry whilst supporting our NSW heritage team. You will have the opportunity to work in a range of natural environments with a diverse range of clients.

As a Research Assistant with Biosis you will be provided with ample opportunity to participate and gain practical experience in archaeological field methods, technical reporting, Aboriginal community consultation, and project management. Our Consultant Development Program will ensure you receive mentoring and support from a senior member of staff.  

 To be considered for this role, candidates must satisfy the following key selection criteria:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in archaeology.
  • Understanding of field investigation, excavation and report writing techniques.
  • Understanding of Commonwealth and State legislation with regard to archaeology.
  • Well organised and a clear proactive communicator.
  • A practical problem solver who can think on their feet.
  • Self-motivated with strong time management skills.
  • Proficient with technology and experienced in the use of Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • A current manual driver’s license.

Desirable selection criteria

  • Artefact analysis skills (Aboriginal and/or historical)
  • Experience working with Aboriginal communities
  • Willingness to work in remote locations
