Consultant Archaeologist, Melbourne – 12 month contract.

Biosis is looking to appoint an experienced Consultant Archaeologist to join our team in Melbourne. This is an excellent opportunity to join a leading consultancy which provides ecological, heritage and environmental approval services throughout south-eastern Australia.   

Working closely with our multi-disciplinary team of professionals, you will become an integral member of the heritage team in Victoria, a key contributor to existing and future projects throughout the state, and a driver for the development of our heritage capabilities in the region.

Biosis employs a highly experienced multi-disciplinary team of aquatic ecologists, archaeologists, botanists, zoologists, environmental planners and GIS operators.  We have offices in Albury, Ballarat, Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, Wangaratta, Western Sydney and Wollongong.

Our Melbourne office is located in Port Melbourne, close to the CBD and easily accessible by public transport.  We are a very short walk from the North Port tram stop. This central location provides access to all the services of Melbourne without the hassle of traffic and parking.

As part of your role, you will provide Aboriginal and historical archaeological and heritage management advice and guidance to our clients, undertake heritage assessments, community consultation, project manage assignments, produce high level technical reports and proposals, and maintain a positive profile in the professional community as an Archaeologist. Opportunities exist to work across Aboriginal and Historical projects in Victoria, working closely with highly regarded archaeologists and heritage professionals as part of a team striving for industry best-practice.

The successful applicant will be able to coach and guide junior staff, participating as a mentor in our well-regarded Consultant Development Program. You will be able to share your experience in a unique growth position with clear development pathways within our motivated and professional heritage team. You will be supported by several senior archaeologists who will strive to strengthen your professional experience and fast-track your development as an archaeologist and heritage specialist. You will report to the Team Leader – Heritage (Victoria) and the Manager – Heritage (Victoria).

Essential selection criteria

To be considered for this role, you will have:

  • Appropriate tertiary qualifications in archaeology.
  • A minimum of three years heritage experience in either consulting or the public sector.
  • Be listed as a ‘Heritage Advisor’ under the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006.
  • Comprehensive interpersonal and relationship building skills, including experience in community consultation.
  • Experience in project management and budget control.
  • Comprehensive report writing and proposal writing skills.
  • An understanding of Commonwealth and Victorian legislation relevant to Aboriginal and Historical heritage assessment.
  • Experience working independently and as a part of a team.
  • Competency with computer programs and software such as MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or similar software packages.
  • A current driver’s licence.

Desirable selection criteria

  • Experience in the Victorian region and Victorian regional areas.
  • Understanding of historical heritage assessments, legislation and guidelines.
  • Experience in tender preparation and client management.
  • Skills in the development and maintenance of lasting client relationships.
  • Experience in sales, business development and client relationship management.
