 Melanie Thomson BSc (Hons)
Manager – Heritage Victoria

Melanie is the manager of the Victorian heritage team and a Senior Consultant Archaeologist with over 16 years’ experience in cultural heritage management throughout Victoria and New South Wales.

Melanie has always had an interest in research and started her studies in Marine Biology in North Queensland but found her true passion was for Australian archaeology. She completed her Bachelor degree (Hons) in archaeology at James Cook University in 2000. The focus of her honours thesis was understanding the social values of key community places in Townsville and to determine the link between built fabric and community values. This work involved a significant amount of community consultation and hours of one on one interviews. While studying, Melanie participated in a Rock Art field school at Jowalbinna near Laura, and developed skills in recording and interpreting Aboriginal rock art sties.

Melanie joined Biosis in 2003 as a Field Archaeologist, working on a number of medium-sized projects in and around Melbourne. In 2005, she took up an opportunity to work with Biosis in NSW and by 2006 she had progressed to a Consultant Archaeologist in the Sydney office. However, much of her work was on large BHP projects in the Sydney Catchment, near Wollongong, surveying and recording Aboriginal rock art sites in the sandstone gullies. The Wollongong office opened in 2007, providing another opportunity to further develop her consulting skills and focus on developing methods for monitoring the effects of mine subsidence at rock art sites.

In 2008, Melanie became the Resource Group Manager of the Wollongong office, leading a small team of eight consultants, including archaeologists, ecologists and GIS officers. She successfully managed a significant number of ecological and heritage projects for a range of major mining clients, along with diversifying the client base in Wollongong and southern NSW.

Following a small hiatus whilst on maternity leave and travelling overseas, Melanie returned to Biosis in 2012 as a Senior Consultant Archaeologist in the ever-expanding heritage team. Her experience and leadership has provided opportunities to mentor junior staff in both technical and legislative requirements.

Melanie now manages the heritage team in Victoria, focusing on project delivery and development of processes and systems that ensure assessment methodologies and reporting meet regulatory standards.
